IN HIS OWNWORDS: STERLING CRAWLEY BRONC RIDER CASHES IN AT COWBOY CHRISTMAS

T his Cowboy Christmas was the best I’ve ever had. I only got checks at a couple of rodeos, but they were the right rodeos. Before this year, the most I had won during a Cowboy Christmas run was almost $8,000. So this was a big difference. We went to as many as we could get to but seemed to be just a spot or two out of the money at most of them. Then came the Ponoka Stampede. That went really well. After that I seemed to pick up a few more reasonable checks and it all came together. At Ponoka, I had no idea of how much money I was making. When you’re getting on horses that are that good and can buck you off, that’s the only thing you’re thinking about. I got to the showdown and I wasn’t sure how things would go, not with me drawing Calgary Stampede’s Wild Cherry. After he made me look silly last year in Puyallup (at the Washington State Fair Pro Rodeo), I’d been wanting a rematch. But I also wanted to get another ride on the horse at a smaller rodeo, somewhere I could get a feel for the bronc before maybe getting on him again at the NFR in Las Vegas, if I get to go back. Last time aboard, I missed him out and he had me everywhere. It was a nerve-wracking couple of hours waiting on that round. I was definitely looking forward to it because I knew that horse was one you could Sterling Crawley won $21,468 over Cowboy Christmas, with the lion’s share of that haul coming from his win at the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. The saddle bronc rider made $18,028 at Ponoka. The money moved the 27-year-old, Texas cowboy from 12th place in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings to eighth as of July 12, as he searches for his fifth qualification for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and third straight.

win it on. In my opinion, I had more horse than anyone else. The trick was getting him ridden and marked out. Plus, with three other great bronc riders – all NFR qualifiers – you can’t count on anything. Wild Cherry and I had a better day. He got a better temper in the chute, but he still left just as hard. Luckily, I was in a little better shape when we left the chute this time. He didn’t quite make me look silly. Riding him (for 88.75 points) and winning there was awesome. Every kid has their list of rodeos they want to win as they go along their career. That was definitely one I wanted to mark off. My brother, Jacobs, and I travel together most of the time. We’re heading to California Rodeo Salinas next. I’ll drive there by myself and pick him up at the airport in California. I enjoy driving by myself when I have the opportunity. I’m anxious to get back to the Wrangler NFR after last season, which was my best trip. I think it was my best performance because of maturing in my bronc riding and in myself as far as taking it seriously and putting in work before you get to the arena. I had earlier nights and a lot more prep before I went out to Vegas. If you just take it serious for the time you’re in the arena it doesn’t do much good. I could feel a difference, too. I could tell around Round 4 or 5. Usually you’re a little banged up or getting tired. But heck, we got done on the 10th night and I felt like I could go run another 10 and we could do it again. The thing I love most about rodeo is the people that you get tomeet and wouldn’t under any other circumstance and the places you get to see. What other job can you do where you get to travel the country andmeet all these people and do it all the while with your family? It’s just a special way tomake a living.

GRILLE COWBOY

For Iowa, La., cowboy ZACK JONGBLOED, rodeo is a way of life. The 19-year-old grew up in the sport, and now he’s leading the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in all-around and steer wrestling, and is fifth in the tie-down roping.

WITH TRACY RENCK PSN

Has your rookie season been everything you expected? Zack: Yes. It has been challenging at some points. I have been able to experience competing in bigger rodeos, which was exciting. I’ve also learned a whole bunch from my traveling partner, Joe Keating (34 years old). Joe and I live close by and rodeoed together around the house. How did you get involved with rodeo? Zack: Through my family. I have two uncles (steer wrestlers) Joey Roberts and Jeff Corbello who made the NFR. I started doing kid rodeos around my house and I just progressed from there. I had a lot of success as I was growing up in rodeo thanks to a lot of hard work. My rodeo mentors have been my uncles. They have been out there just about every practice with me and giving me pointers. It comes in handy having them help me. (Roberts qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 1989 and 1991; Corbello qualified in 1998, 2003 and 2005). What’s your best event, steer wrestling or tie-down roping? Zack: It would be hard for me to choose between the two. They each have their ups and downs, but right now I couldn’t pick a favorite.

What horses are you using for steer wrestling and tie-down roping? Zack: For steer wrestling, I have my bay horse, named Fishhook. He’s 10. I have had him for two years. In tie-down, I have two horses, Roy, 14, and QB, 16. These three horses mean everything to me. You’re only as good as your horse. If you don’t have a good one, you don’t have much of a chance. My horses have done very well this year. What would it mean if you could win rookie of the year in all-around, steer wrestling or tie-down roping? Zack: That would be a great accomplishment. It would be something to check off my bucket list. I’ve been to the NFR as a fan and there’s nothing like it. It would be cool to go there to win rookie of the year. Every bit of my drive right now is to make the NFR. What’s your favorite restaurant? Zack: I would go with Outback. I get prime rib, loaded baked potato and sweet tea to drink. What’s your favorite type of candy? Zack: I like Hershey’s with almonds. As for desserts, I would go with blackberry cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. Are you college rodeoing as well as competing in the PRCA? Zack: Yes. I’m attending McNeese State (in Lake Charles, La., 25 miles from Iowa, La.) and I’m on the rodeo team. I just finished my freshman year. I went to the College National Finals in tie-down roping and steer wrestling, and I was the reserve champion tie-down roper. That was a great accomplishment and a great experience. I will be going to McNeese for three more years, and I plan on getting a business degree. A degree is something no one can ever take away from you. Do you run your own business now?

Zack: Yes. It is called Paradise Fun Jumps. We have bounce houses and we do any type of party. I own this business with a buddy of mine. We’ve owned it for almost a year. The business is going great. We have had a busy summer. I’m glad it is something I’ve started young, so it has the opportunity to grow.

You were a talented high school quarterback, what was that like? Zack: I was a Class 3A all-state quarterback at Iowa High School, and I decided not to play my senior year. My coaches weren’t too happy about the decision I made. I wanted to dedicate more of my time to rodeo. Two of the main things I got out of football were working out and staying in shape. Who is your favorite football player? Zack: (New Orleans Saints quarterback) Drew Brees. I like watching him play. As for college, I’m an LSU fan. I’ve been to a handful of LSU football games, and it is exciting and gets your blood flowing.

Is your family in the crawfish business? Zack: Yes. They own Country Club Crawfish in Lake Charles.

What’s the most crawfish you can eat in one sitting? Zack: Probably anywhere from five to seven pounds. I like the hot crawfish, you have to go big. What do you like to do when you’re not rodeoing? Zack: I like to hunt deer and ducks. I’ve been hunting for as long as I can remember.

How many times have you been to Mardi Gras? Zack: I’ve been three or four times. It’s pretty chaotic and wild. It’s definitely something to experience.

Jesse Wright, the 2012 PRCA World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider, was in the mix to make his eighth career appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo this year. That plan, however, took a detour when he was bucked off Calgary Stampede’s Urgent Delivery, June 29, at the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. Wright landed on his left shoulder, breaking his left clavicle. “I blew a stirrup and fell off on my shoulder before the whistle,” said Wright, 29. “Then it all just happened really quick. It whipped me out to the side and jerked me to the right real hard. I hold on with my right hand, and it just whipped me that way and I just came down on my left shoulder. It was the first thing to hit.” Wright underwent surgery July 3 to have the left clavicle plated back together. He is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks. As of July 12, Wright was 25th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $26,554. Wright qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2010-14 and 2016-17. Tie-down roper Cade Swor, a seven-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, is out indefinitely with a broken right arm. Swor suffered the injury while competing at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo, July 11. He underwent surgery the same day and is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks. BY THE NUMBERS

The number of spots heeler Trey Yates moved up in the PRCA | RAM World Standings between June 11 and July 12. That put Yates second in the standings with $58,289. He and his partner/header Aaron Tsinigine earned $21,729 each during Cowboy Christmas. Yates is eyeing his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The amount of money saddle bronc rider Chase Brooks earned during Cowboy Christmas 2018. Over the entirety of the 2017 season, Brooks earned $21,454. As a result of his Cowboy Christmas haul, Brooks is in line to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The amount of money bareback rider Jake Brown has earned during his four career rides on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Painted River.

Swor qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2004-06 and 2014-17. He finished a career-best fourth in the 2017 world standings with $210,748. As of July 12, he was 22nd in the world standings with $34,880. While Wright and Swor are out for a while, bareback rider Tanner Aus, who was 20th in the July 12 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $30,252, is hoping to return to action after injuring his left knee June 2 at the Flint Hills Rodeo in Strong City, Kan. He suffered grade 2 tears of his posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his left knee, but did not need surgery. “I just caught my toe in the gate leaving the chute,” he said. “The horse shouldered into the gate and I caught my toe and peeled her back around.” Aus, 28, is a three-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR (2015-17). He finished a career- best third in the 2017 world standings. Aus is hoping to return to competition

Multiple records fall during Christmas These are the runs cowboys – and the record books – remember. Over the course of Cowboy Christmas, several records fell or were tied at PRCA rodeos. Team ropers Dustin Egusquiza and Kory Koontz broke the rodeo record at the Oakley (Utah) Independence Day Rodeo with a time of 3.5 seconds July 6. The duo won the rodeo and each earned $3,946. Egusquiza and Koontz were the second team to break the rodeo record that day, as team ropers Jeff Flenniken/Jake Minor briefly held the best mark at 3.9 seconds before Egusquiza and Koontz’s run. “We just had a really good steer, and I got a good start and headed on him pretty fast,” Egusquiza said. “It just shaped up really fast. Kory heeled him as quick as possible. I’ve been 3.5 a few other times, but that’s the fastest I’ve ever been.” Before July 6, the Oakley City record in team roping was shared by three sets of team ropers at 4.1 seconds. Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira, and John Alley and Clark Adcock set the record in 2016. In 2017, Charly Crawford and Joseph Harrison tied the record. “Dustin got it on really fast and it worked good,” said Koontz, a 21-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR. “That was more like an NFR time right there.” • Steer wrestler Will Lummus set the two-head average record at 7.0 seconds at the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo., and tied the rodeo record with a 3.2-second time in the second round while on K.C. Jones’ horse, Tebow. Kenny Coppini (2002) and Matt Reeves (2010) shared the previous record in the two-head average at 7.5 seconds. Lummus shares the Rooftop Rodeo 3.2-second record with John Lowry, who set the record in 1976, and Chad Hagan, who matched the time in 2002. “Honestly, I didn’t even know I did tie the record,” Lummus said after his

3.2-second run. “That’s the fastest I’ve ever been.” • Team ropers Tyler Wade and Tyler McKnight joined the record-breaking fray in Estes Park when they set the arena record at the Rooftop Rodeo. Wade and McKnight clocked a 4.0-second run July 10 to win the one- header and establish the record at the Rooftop Rodeo, which has been taking place since 1947. “It’s pretty awesome when you make a good run like that,” Wade said. “I don’t think you can go after one like that, I think it is just going to happen.” McKnight concurred. “Tyler told me our steer was good,” he said. “I tried to lead him pretty straight, so he had a good throw to throw fast, and he handled perfect and made it easy for me.” Wade and McKnight broke the record that was held by three sets of team ropers at 4.1 seconds. Brady Tryan and York Gill set the record in 2012, as did Paul David Tierney and Cody Doescher. Egusquiza and Clint Summers matched the record in 2016. • Rowdy Parrott, who was riding Tyler Pearson’s American Quarter Horse, Bobby, and had three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Kyle Irwin as his hazer, broke the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo steer wrestling record with a 3.4- second run July 4. “It was very exciting to know I had just broken the arena record,” Parrott said. “It’s the first arena record I have.” The Mamou, La., cowboy topped the previous record of 3.5 seconds that was set by Mike Fuller in 1986 and matched by Luke Branquinho (2002) and Shawn Greenfield (2016). • Also, at the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo, team ropers Steven Duby/Evan Arnold tied the rodeo record with a 4.1-second run in the first round. Charly Crawford and Joseph Harrison set the St. Paul record of 4.1 seconds in 2017.
