President’s Welcome I would like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone attending the 2018 Royal County of Berkshire Show which is the 33rd show held on this site and for the first time dogs are more than welcome to join us in the designated dog-friendly areas of the Showground. This will be a huge benefit for families not wanting to leave their dogs at home and allowing them to join in the family fun.

My chosen charity this year is The Thames Valley Air Ambulance who provide lifesaving medical care throughout Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Each day an average of three people will find themselves in a life-threatening situation that requires urgent, high quality medical treatment and they receive no Government or Lottery funding. I hope you have a truly memorable visit to the Showground this year. Peter Carlisle

All the members of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society are very welcome too and I hope you enjoy all the benefits of the Members’ enclosure where you can enjoy a sociable drink or bite to eat with your fellow members and guests. Momentum has been steadily growing over the last few months as the countdown began for what I am hoping will be a truly memorable September week-end in the County of Berkshire’s calendar. There has been much preparation with the army of volunteers and employees alike as they strive to organise the event. I would also like to thank the many sponsors, both large and small for their generous support and without you we could not exist in our usual format. At the Show we are very excited to be marking the 100th Centenary since the end of the First World War and to do this there will be a parade of vintage agricultural machinery and of course we must not forget the Grand Parade of the prize-winning livestock on both Saturday and Sunday. One of the highlights in the main arena will be the Bolddog Lings Motocross display team who will stun us with their bravery and acrobatic skills. There will also be a wonderful opportunity to go shopping for gifts, clothes, food and even beverages. A New Enterprise Zone will make an appearance at the show for the first time to help promote up and coming businesses in the area.

2

Chairman’s Welcome It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our showground for the Royal County of Berkshire Show. It may be hard to imagine but this year’s show has taken a year to put together with a tremendous amount of effort from our volunteers who are backed up by the staff team.

animals in the Society building between 12 and 3pm. The Flower & horticultural tent has also moved to a more central location with the introduction of a café and domestic classes. You will still find a wide selection of plants and fruit and vegetables to help you gain inspiration for your garden. We will be showcasing Visit a County this year, a brand new feature for our fellow counties to exhibit their amazing work, with Somerset taking the reign, and another innovation is the new business Enterprise Zone, which hosts new businesses that are less than a year old. As well as all the new additions, you can expect to find all the popular attractions such as the craft tent, a spectacular main arena line-up, a jam packed equine schedule as well as many free have-a-go activities for all the family to enjoy! So, as you see there is a lot for you and your friends and families to experience during your visit and I really hope that you enjoy your day!

Agricultural shows need to continue to evolve to keep things fresh therefore we have made some exciting changes. The Food Fayre has been moved to the south end of the showground just off avenue F and will be, as usual, full of amazing artisan producers. We have listened to comments and for the first time in a number of years, we are welcoming well-behaved dogs to the Show as well as a brand new dog zone. There are some areas that dogs will not be allowed into so please take note of signage as you walk around the show. This will be the 54th show that I have attended, the first being in 1964 at Henwick aged nine months. In that time I have seen the show progress from a one day event to the current two day show format, moving from Henwick to Seige Cross at Thatcham, then to Shaw and finally to its current location in 1985. Our objective is to educate and promote agriculture and the rural way of life to the wider public. To that end we are celebrating 100 years of farming with a pageant in the main ring beginning with horse drawn carts, steam engines and one of the first tractors to arrive in 1918. The pageant will move forward in ten year periods culminating in a demonstration of the latest kit available to farmers in 2018. The Grand Parade of livestock is a spectacle not to be missed with the best of the best being paraded. We have good entries competing this year, and visitors will be able to get up close with the

HEROS Equestrian Academy

Every year thousands of racehorses leave the sport for a variety of reasons including injury, old age and lack of ability. But retirement from racing does not have to mean the end for these horses. HEROS was granted charitable status with help from RoR (Retraining of Racehorses) and North Farm Stud in 2006 as the increasing demand for rehoming meant that founder, Grace Muir, needed to have the ability to raise funds to help even more ex-racehorses. The charity has successfully rehomed many hundreds of ex-racehorses and developed an extremely good reputation for correctly matching the horses to their new owners across all disciplines; competition horses, hacks or companions. Truly giving them an opportunity to enjoy ‘A New Life After Racing’.

HEROS aims to: Retrain and rehome ex-racehorses for an appropriate life after racing, ensuring the new owner is correctly matched with the horse Give training, advice and ongoing support in all aspects of equine care and resettlement Support the racing industry in its commitment to the welfare of ex-racehorses Provide opportunities to enable young

people to participate in learning, development and employment programmes with horses

Provide a specific education, training and work-related experience for people who want to work in the racing or equine industry

MAIN ARENA Saturday 1.45pm Sunday 1.25pm

A demonstration of the agricultural advances over the last 100 years

introduced, which was quicker and more agile, and so agriculture was born into a new age of farming. This year, at The Royal County of Berkshire Show we take you on a journey through the decades since the end of World War One, displaying a magnificent showcase of farming equipment and machinery. From ploughs, seed drills and hay making equipment, to the latest technology such as precision seeding, GPS crop application and yield mapping which assist getting the nutrients in the right place during the following years crop.

During the First World War horses were sent to the front line in France to help the many soldiers that fought for our freedom. However, sad as it is, many did not return. With their absence ever more present in the farming community, it was time to start developing. And so the revolutionary change from horses to mechanical agriculture now spurred into action! Steam engines had been used previously during the war but they were slow, heavy and couldn’t complete the job to the standard needed. Then the tractor was
