Chebeague Island Council Calendar

#11 | November 2016

November 2016 • Issue #11 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar

On the Cover The Kids’ Place was started by the Chebeague Parents’ Association in 2008 and moved to its own building in 2010. Currently, the Kids’ Place operates as part of the Chebeague Recreation Center, serving 9 families and 11 children weekly and a mix of approximately 40 children at various times throughout the year. Children currently attending range from one to seven years of age. Three are enrolled in our twice-weekly preschool program, which prepares children for the pre-K classroom in the public school. This year, we have had over 16 volunteers of all ages and we have awarded 75 hours of community service credits to high school and middle school students. The Kids’ Place is always looking for volunteers to help out with children’s programs. We are also always fundraising. Currently, we hope to raise enough money to buy some cozy children’s furniture to create a reading corner for our daily attendees. If you are interested in helping out or becoming involved, email us at kidsplace@chebeague.net or call 846-8712 and talk to Carrie Ridgway. (Photo courtesy of Cathy MacNeill.) About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Notes from the Chebeague Island Council

The Council had a very busy and productive October. Forty-three islanders came for their flu shot on the 14 th !! Thank you to all who helped and to Mac and Beth for the wonderful donuts. I think folks come for the donuts and get a flu shot as an afterthought. Maybe we should call it the Donut Clinic and offer the flu shot if you want one…. The Council has been working hard to ensure health care services are available on the island. We met with MaineHealth and are very excited to announce that Steve Baybutt, RN, MS, will be coming to the Wellness Center every other Tuesday starting November 1. He will be here from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. No appointment is needed, and there is no charge for this service. These hours could be increased if needed, and through MaineHealth, the Council will be able to offer expanded services such as foot care clinics at both the Wellness Center and the Commons. Steve is able to do many things including blood draws, INR tests, blood pressure checks, wound care, suture removal, immunizations, and home visits for chronic illness monitoring to name a few. We

are happy to say, again, that these services will be available to islanders at no charge. He will be able to go to the Commons as well. There are plans to offer school health programs that will be both fun and educational. Steve has a master’s degree in nursing and holds Certifications in Emergency Nursing, Trauma Nursing, Pediatric Emergency Nursing, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Basic Life Support as well as specializing in Telehealth and Rapid Response. A resident of Yarmouth, Steve has been a soccer coach and knows many island families. He and his wife, a reading specialist in the Falmouth school system, have two children in elementary school in Yarmouth and have deep roots in the Littlejohn Island community. Please stop in the Wellness Center and meet Steve on Tuesday November 1. Iwant to thank the community for all their support and encouragement while the Council has been working to ensure the availability of health care services on the island. I believe our growing partnership with MaineHealth will bring new and exciting health care opportunities for islanders of all ages. See you Tuesday morning November 1!

Notes from the Hall

A new sign in the Hall says “Gather.” Indeed, that is what we are all about—gathering. There are town meetings, committeemeetings, Whalers’ rehearsals, flu clinics, informational events sponsored by the Council, and of course, the Wednesday affairs. This year is a little different, so mark your calendars: Community Lunch is served the third Wednesday of each month from noon to 1:00 p.m. and is headed up by Arlene. Susie and Arlene will also offer Community Breakfast every fourth Wednesday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; every other Wednesday, start your morning with a great cuppa Joe and a treat made by Gina and then come back at noon for soup—your choice of vegetarian or meat-based— cooked up by Ruth and Wanda with assistance from Deb and Ester. So join us and gather!

Wellness Matters: Avoiding Holiday Temptation by Jenny Hackel

Oh boy, here come the holidays: Thanksgiving turkey with the fixin’s, holiday parties, Christmas cookies, and New Year’s dinner. The sugar plums are already dancing in my head. But food is so abundant in our society, we now have an epidemic of health problems related to obesity: hypertension, diabetes, strokes, heart disease, sleep apnea, and cancer. No wonder so many people wake up on New Year’s Day and resolve to lose weight. Here are ten ways we can support each other in making healthier choices this holiday season so those New Year’s resolutions can be about something more fun. 1. Don’t skip meals. Many people think that if they skip breakfast or lunch, they can eat twice as much at dinner. Research shows that people who skip a meal usually end up eating three to four times the number of calories at the next meal. Hunger is stronger than reason! 2. Bake, broil, steam, or sauté instead of fry. Fried food has hidden fats, which are the most calorie-dense of all the foods we eat, and raises blood cholesterol. 3. Plan ahead. Don’t go too hungry to a party—eat a salad first, and drink a good tall glass of water—we often drink too much alcohol and eat too many appetizers even before dinner starts. Focus instead on people and conversation. 4. Leave the platters on the buffet table. People eat more food than they need when the platters are within easy reach on the table. 5. Serve and eat lots of healthful fruits and veggies. Use rounds of fresh cucumber and thin slices of apple

to replace crackers. Dip celery and other vegetables in hummus. As themain course, go for green beans sprinkled with sliced roasted almonds, julienne carrots sautéed with ginger and soy, roasted cauliflower tossed with basil pesto, salad greens with sliced peppers and vinaigrette— the healthier options are endless and delicious. 6. Serve smaller portions. Instead of a big scoop of stuffing, take a small one. Instead of five ounces of meat, take three or four, but don’t scrimp on the low-cal veggies. 7. Use lower calorie alternatives. You can replace the full- fat ice cream and chocolate sauce with low-fat frozen yogurt and a sprinkle of granola and fresh berries for half the calories. In so doing, you get more vitamins and fiber and eat less fat and sugar. 8. Savor the flavor. Sometimes there is no low-calorie alternative to your favorite Christmas pudding. Okay! Eat a smaller portion with a small Turkish coffee spoon and cherish every bite. A dietitian once told me it’s the first three bites that give people the most pleasure, the rest is empty calories, so really focus on the taste. 9. Read labels. Learn what a serving is; avoid foods where more than a third of the calories come from fat, especially saturated fat; stay away from corn syrup and added sugar when possible. Go with more natural, less processed foods and those with the least amount of salt. 10. Plan party activities that are not about eating. Sing songs, play charades, get out the board games, go for a walk, play Twister, dance the Macarena, plan a holiday treasure hunt. Here’s to your—and our—health!

Marty’s Memories: The Village by Marty Trower

Chebeague Opportunities

The Village—that’s what we used to call it, although some called it “The Center.” Pedaling there on our bikes made for a fun, independent excursion. The picture shows Leonard’s Store on the left with its high facade and wooden sign. There’s a gasoline pump almost cut off to the left of the store. Is that the old Post Office to the right, with the leaning electrical pole in front of it? And loping along in the shadows at the front of the picture is Skipper, our first springer spaniel.

~ New to the market, modern, classic shingled cottage and garage sited on 3 private acres w/sandy beach. Beautiful reclaimed red birch floors throughout. ~ Waterfront 3 BR/3 BA year-round home with raised panel woodwork, spacious rooms and first floor den/future bedroom with adjoining bath. ~ Golf course and water views with ROW. Over 3400 SF Timber Frame extraordinaire. FP bricks made at Division Point. Attached carriage house. In-law apartment. ~ New Englander built facing the water in 1915. Four upstairs BR’s and a peek at the water. High ceilings, original moldings, and FHW heat. Priced to move.

I found the number “54” stenciled on the back of the photo. I assume that’s short for 1954. And there you have some factual details about this photo. What interests me most—and what I hope affects readers the same way—is the trigger effect such visuals can have on our other senses. Only because I am now letting myself take the time to linger with a picture am I able to travel within it. I go from the prominent storefront to the slant-roofed building to the almost not noticeable dog in the foreground. Then, my eye is taken back to the store again. This time I notice what seems to be the dirt road out front. It appears dry, with no dark rain spots. I’m remembering now the hot climb on bikes up the hill by Lewis Ross’s house. Going into the store. Dark wood walls, wooden counter tops and display cases. Light pouring in from somewhere onto open bins and boxes of—all I remember is the corn. Grandpa Trower wanted corn on the cob all the time when he lived with us. We went to Leonard’s Store a lot. The Post Office had that same old dark wood glow to it. I remember the wooden mail slot boxes and creaking wooden floors. I found one of those boxes in a dumpster at the transfer station about twenty years ago. It still had name labels on it. I’ve stored it, taking up too much space, with all of the other cumbersome objects that remind me of the old days on Chebeague. My father found the rope-lettered Bounty Lounge sign at the dump as well. We bequeathed it to my nephew Ben Jackson after Dad died. Ben presented it to Jonathan KomLosy when he opened the Slow Bell Cafe. So you see how it goes. I hope you too will stop for a moment and let an old Chebeague photo take you back to another time and place on the island. I hope you will write about it. I wonder whether you will have to use the words “old” and “wood” a lot.

One Man’s Island by Bob Libby

On our island the eleventh month enters like the eleventh hour. Soon the trees will mostly stand bare; a stubborn few will hold worn dry leaves like tattered battle flags. Even the evergreens have dumped mounds of needles to be raked and heaped around the roses. We are saddened by the shortened days; light deprivation is real to our psyches. We who are early risers like to walk the beaches and ledges as our place on the planet turns toward the sun. In November that dawn arrives three hours later and much colder than a few months ago. One might not walk barefooted by the shore. Sand and grasses crunch with frost. Now the commuters ride the Islander in darkness and return in darkness. October’s full harvest moon rose over the recently shuttered Chebeague Island Inn reflecting a path across the bay toward Cousins Island wharf and illuminating a multicolored foliage quilt thrown over the island’s flanks. November’s next full moon will rise over bare trees in dark skies. Out in the garden and woods now, we hear sporadic gunshots and the herd of deer that we have observed all summer under the apple trees on the golf

course and nibbling daylilies in our garden has headed to the low bogs of the back shore. As we amend the soil and plant the garlic bulbs, the scent of wood smoke permeates all.We look forward to evening with another oak log thrown on the hearth and Paula’s warm stew steaming on the plate. How ironic that Thanksgiving is celebrated in November and families eagerly come to our island to celebrate family traditions. We will be thankful that the ugliest election cycle of our lifetimes will be over and we can turn our attention to the real problems that our community faces. The evidence of the effects of climate change are beyond dispute. The ocean surrounding our island is changing in ways that will challenge the resilience and innovation of our citizens. The optimists among us work now to make the future better, bulbs are planted, compost piles are turned. The fishing, clamming, and aquaculture groups are discovering methods to protect the harvest from the sea. We have dark days ahead, but we will persevere, and experience teaches us that spring will come again.

Kids of all ages are welcome, though our Deep Blue Kids One Room Schoolhouse curriculum focuses on children ages 3 through 12 with videos, stories, and more! Contact Cheryl Hillicoss at i.m.imaginable@gmail.com for

more information on how you or your children can get involved. Many thanks to the United Methodist Foundation of New England for awarding us a grant to kickstart this program! Race and Faith — Starting the week of October 30, we’ll be offering a 4-week discussion group on race and faith: specifically on white privilege through the black/white divide in our country and the spiritual healing that comes as we learn how to see and experience race through new eyes. We’ll be using resources offered by the United Church of Christ. For more information, email Melissa and check the Church Calendar and our Facebook page for more specifics around dates and times. God Bless Us, Everyone: The Redemption of Scrooge — November 27 marks the beginning of Advent —the time of watching and waiting as we get ready for Christmas. This year, we’ll worship and study together using Matt Rawle’s book The Redemption of Scrooge , which examines Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol and what it has to teach us about living a life of faith. After all, if Scrooge got a second chance, don’t we all deserve one? We’ll have movie- watching parties, small group studies, and more! What Are You Looking for? — God is always seeking us, but sometimes, we don’t have the tools at our disposal to find God in the midst of our everyday life. If you’d like to learn more about practices that help you listen to God, contact Melissa. Thank You from the Food Pantry — A special thank you to all who thought of the food pantry as you closed up your cottages for the season. Your donation was gratefully received, and much of it has already been passed along! The Recompense Fund

The School’s Adventure to Cow Island Chebeague Island schoolteachers Kristin Westra and Tammy Hoidal applied to the Recompense Fund for a grant for all students to attend the Rippleffect program on Cow Island to kick off the school year. Recompense funded their proposal in full at the end of August. Only a few weeks later, when school opened, grades 1 through 5 were on their way in the Rippleffect boat across the waters of Casco Bay to Cow Island.

The air rushed right past me.”—A fourth grader “Draining all noise from my body, I kick. I hold on for dear life. The ground rushes beneath me. Cold air blows in my face. Feeling like I’m flying, I lean forward to go faster. Whoosh, I hit the end with a jolt.”—A fourth grader “I liked the rock wall at Rippleffect. At first, it was a little scary. When I was close to the top I knew I could do it. I did not like it when I looked down.”—A second grader

After the trip the teachers commented that “Rippleffect was an amazing way to begin our school year. Working as a team and supporting each other sets the tone we wish to embrace at Chebeague Island School. The experience exceeded our expectations and really gave all students the opportunity to shine.” When board member and Island School alumnus Justin Doughty visited the students after their trip, he was overwhelmed by their enthusiastic responses to the adventure: “The first thing my group had to go on was the rock wall. The Checks for 2015 Have Been Sent!!!! The Chebeague Island Council and the Chedemption “Bag Ladies” want to thank all the dedicated volunteers who support Chedemption. Without the community’s support and the many, many volunteers who spend countless hours helping sort, pack, and label bags and boxes, we would not be able to function. We plan to send the 2016 checks out in April 2017. Giving Thanks for a Great Neighbor We wish to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Doug Ross for his unfailing commitment to displaying the flags in the Island Center. Safety Matters: LifeFlight Lands on Chebeague by Nancy Earnest

On Saturday October 15, Heather Cady, Clinical Operations Director of LifeFlight of Maine, came out to the island to educate members of the Chebeague Island Fire and Rescue about cases in which helicopter transport might be needed. LifeFlight is overseen by Central Maine Medical HealthCare and Eastern Maine HealthCare and will also soon have a base in Sanford. LifeFlight is called when every second counts between injury and arrival at a hospital. For instance, a LifeFlight helicopter can reach Portland from Chebeague in less than ten minutes. They can also go directly to Boston or another trauma center as needed. LifeFlight also has an airplane for use on longer emergency flights. Each LifeFlight helicopter is staffed by a pilot, a paramedic, and a registered nurse. When not on LifeFlight calls, their paramedics and nurses also work on staff at various hospitals to maintain critical skills. All helicopters are equipped with blood, intensive care–level equipment, night-vision goggles, and extensive medical kits. Ms. Cady reviewed steps for our Fire and Rescue team to take before the helicopter arrives. We learned how to set up a safe landing spot in various weather scenarios. For example, under normal conditions, the school ball field could be used, and in snowy weather, an area could be plowed on or beside Wharf Road. The team practiced setting up a landing zone, stood by with Engine 4, and—thanks to the new antenna—communicated very successfully with the LifeFlight crew by radio during approach and landing. The team toured the helicopter and learned about both its interior and exterior features. Finally, we coordinated a safe takeoff of the helicopter. It is comforting to know that when extreme emergencies happen on Chebeague, help is only a LifeFlight away.

Opening soon! The Red Studio Resale Shop at the Island Commons! The Commons board is expanding your donating and buying opportunities by opening a resale shop in our charming red studio. (Fear not: We will continue our fabulous annual yard sale. What would August be without it?) But we will also provide year-round opportunities to donate and purchase furniture, antiques, decorative pieces and architectural salvage materials. We will be accepting furniture and furnishings for resale. We are ending our “open door” policy for drop offs simply because we do not have the space. To donate, contact Sam McLean (846-0510 or samhidval@gmail.com ) or Susan Stranahan (846- 9378 or susan.stranahan@gmail.com ). We will make arrangements to come take a look. Please note: We can only accept items in good condition. We ask that you donate dishes, trinkets, linens and kitchen items to the Grange. During the winter, the Red Studio will be open by appointment. We will post information about new donations on our web site and Facebook page, so check it out. To schedule an appointment, contact Sam or Susan. Stay tuned for the Grand Opening of The Red Studio Resale Shop! And thanks for your support.
