GUIDELINES

GUIDELINES FOR USING SPECIFIC ™ DIETS AND THE PRODUCT BOOK

DESCRIPTION OF EACH DIET The central part of this product book is the detailed description of each diet, including the dietary characteristics, indications, raw materials, nutrient content and feeding advice. For the description of the dietary characteristics, the dietary nutrient content has been compared to the composition of SPECIFIC ™ maintenance diets for adult dogs and cats. LIST OF INGREDIENTS The raw materials in the diets are listed in descending order according to quantity. SPECIFIC ™ diets do not contain synthetic colours or flavouring.

The SPECIFIC ™ range consists of highly palatable, complete maintenance diets for healthy cats and dogs and special care diets for nutritional support of cats and dogs with clinical conditions. The aim of this product book is to provide the staff of veterinary practices and hospitals with information on the dietary composition of the range and guidelines for the use of SPECIFIC ™ diets.

SPECIFIC ™ IS OPTIMAL LIFELONG NUTRITION

FIXED FORMULA To ensure that the dog or cat receives the same balance of ingredients and nutrients from every bag/canflex/pouch of SPECIFIC ™ , we produce each product according to a fixed formulation. This means that the recipe for the diet is identical from batch to batch.

VERSION 03-2018

GUIDELINES

FEEDING ADVICE The feeding advice for the SPECIFIC ™ diets is based on the calculations for energy requirements of average dogs/cats. It is important to remember that the individual energy requirement may vary depending on factors such as breed, environment, season and activity level etc. The feeding advice, stated in the product book and on the packaging material, should therefore always be considered as a starting point, and by monitoring the weight of the pet, the amount of food must be adjusted accordingly. PREVENTING OBESITY SPECIFIC ™ diets are made of high-quality raw materials, and protein, fat and carbohydrates are all highly digestible. It is well known that obesity in cats and dogs has become a major health problem, and to prevent obesity SPECIFIC ™ diets are moderate in energy due to a moderate fat content and the content of fibres (except those products deliberately formulated to be high in energy).

NUTRIENT CONTENT, EXPRESSED ON WEIGHT AND ENERGY BASIS (MJ OR 1000 KCAL) The quantity of a particular diet consumed by cats and dogs in order to maintain their ideal weight, will be determined by the diet’s energy content, which implies that the pets will need to eat a larger quantity of a diet with a low energy density. The most appropriate way of comparing the compositions of diets is therefore by expressing the nutrient content based on energy. In this product book, the nutrient content is expressed per MJ or 1000 kcal of metabolisable energy (ME).

The energy density of the diets has been calculated with the new European standard for calculation of energy (EN16967:2017)

FACTORS WHEN CALCULATING BETWEEN KCAL, KJ AND MJ

1 kcal = 4.184 kJ

1 kJ = 0.239 kcal

1 MJ = 1000 kJ

SPECIFIC ™ PRODUCED WITH ADVANCED FISH OIL FORMULA

All SPECIFIC ™ diets with this pictogram contain the important unsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish. Working with fatty acids from fish demands special expertise, in order to preserve the beneficial effect of the fatty acids, as overcooking them or preserving them incorrectly can reduce their effectiveness. Many years of experience in working with fish and

fish oil have given SPECIFIC ™ this special competence. This ensures that the SPECIFIC ™ diets in general contain high levels of well protected EPA and DHA.

SOME OF THE MANY BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF EPA AND DHA IS THE SUPPORT OF: Healthy skin and coat Function of the immune system Development of brain and vision in puppies and kittens

Kidney function Mobility of joints

VERSION 03-2018

GUIDELINES

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPECIFIC ™ DIET You can find a list with the appropriate SPECIFIC ™ diet for the support of special conditions in dogs and cats in the Recommendation overview under Technical information on SPECIFIC ™ . For some condi tions several SPECIFIC ™ diets are listed. In these cases the optimal diet should be determined for each individual pet. At the end of the product book a convenient review is given for the dietary management of urolithiasis, allergic dermatitis, healthy joints and mobility and gastrointestinal disorders. For a quick selection of a diet with a certain characteristic (low or high level of a particular nutrient, presence/absence of a particular type of raw material, ability to induce low/high urinary pH) or nutrient level, see Technical information on SPECIFIC ™ .

RECOMMENDED PERIOD FOR USE The EU-labeling directive prescribes the labelling text required on the packaging material of the special care SPECIFIC ™ diets. The directive gives guidelines for the nutritional purpose of the diet, declaration of nutrients and also recommends for how long the diet should be used. Before the diet can be used for a longer period than recommended, a veterinarian should be consulted. Ultimately, the veterinary surgeon will decide how long a patient needs to be fed a certain diet. If it cannot be recommended to use a SPECIFIC ™ diet permanently it is stated in the product book under the SPECIFIC ™ diet.

COMPLIANCE WITH THE DIET IS ESSENTIAL FOR EFFICACY

The nutrient levels and raw materials in all SPECIFIC ™ special care diets have been carefully selected to achieve the optimal nutritional support for cats and dogs with clinical conditions. It is therefore essential that the pet is exclusively fed the diet recommended by the veterinary surgeon to take full advantage of the beneficial effect.

SHELF-LIFE OF SPECIFIC ™ DIETS

All SPECIFIC ™ dry diets have a shelf-life of 18 months from production. All SPECIFIC ™ wet diets have a shelf-life of 24 months from production. The expiry date is printed on the bag/ canflex/pouch. The SPECIFIC ™ dry diets with a very high content of fish oil are packed in a protective atmosphere in an airtight bag. These products also have a shelf-life of 18 months, but after opening they should be used within approx. 3 months. This is stated on the bag.

During lactation the energy requirement depends on the number of puppies. For 2, 4 and 8 puppies, the increase in the energy requirement is 1.5, 2 and 3 times the requirement of a normal adult dog. The daily individual requirement may vary depending on factors such as breed, environment, season, activity etc. It is therefore advisable to continue monitoring condition and body weight, adjusting the amount fed accordingly.

DHA from fish

EPA and DHA are both omega-3 fatty acids with a beneficial effect on the development of healthy joints, skin and coat.

Joint, skin & coat support

Immune support

SPECIFIC TM CPW PUPPY ALL BREEDS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

INGREDIENTS Pork, maize, egg powder, sunflower oil, rice, minerals, cellulose powder, fish oil, vitamins and trace elements (including chelated trace elements), psyllium husk, yeast (source of βß-1,3/1,6-glucans). It contains no artificial antioxidants, colours or flavouring. FEEDING GUIDE IN GRAMS PER DAY Example: A breed with an expected adult weight of 16 kg. If the puppy weighs 4 kg (25% of the adult weight), the daily requirement will be approximately 415 g SPECIFIC TM CPW Puppy All Breeds. When it weighs 8 kg (50% of the adult weight), the puppy requires approximately 590 g a day. When it weighs 12 kg (75% of the adult weight), the puppy requires approximately 655 g a day.

£ For puppies of small and medium-sized breeds, SPECIFIC TM CPW Puppy All Breeds is a very suitable diet for feeding from weaning (5-6 weeks) until the puppies have reached 80% of their adult weight. From that point, the puppy can be gradually introduced to SPECIFIC TM CXD Adult Small Breed/CXD Adult Medium Breed/CXW Adult All Breeds. £ During pregnancy and lactation , the energy and nutrient requirements in bitches increase. Therefore, SPECIFIC TM CPW Puppy All Breeds is a suitable diet for pregnant and lactating bitches of all breeds.

£ It is important to monitor the growth of the puppy carefully to avoid overfeeding.

£ The energy and nutrient requirements may be increased during recovery from surgery, trauma and anorexia. CPW Puppy All Breeds is very suitable as a diet during these periods of high energy requirement.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR

£ Puppies of large and giant breeds with increased susceptibility to skeletal problems should not be fed only CPW Puppy All Breeds. It is recommended to feed large and giant breed puppies SPECIFIC TM CPD-XL Puppy Large & Giant Breed because of its lower energy density and calcium content.
