Niacinamide is the physiologically active form of niacin. Niacinamide (nicotinamide) functions
metabolically as a component of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and
nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Both NAD and NADP function as proton
donors and acceptors in metabolic processes including glycolysis, fatty acid synthesis, and
respiration.
Naturally occurring nicotinic acid is readily converted
in-vivo
to the biologically active
niacinamide.
The aqueous solution is neutral to litmus. One gram of niacinamide is soluble in about 1 mL of
water and in about 1.5 mL of alcohol.
