but only a ridge turret, H olm ens Church (9) looks as if it

were from the 1730 s and n ot from Christian IV 's days.

The tower of H elligánd skirken (the Church o f the H o ly

Ghost, 13) is in the w ro n g place, and furtherm ore, the

spire did not in reality lo ok like the one depicted here.

Nor is the spire of St. Petri Church correct. The etching

is copied after M arselis' v iew from 17 1 8 (cat. no. 26) w ith

the addition o f Christian sborg and the spires w h ich were

reerected after the fire in 172 8 , out o f w h ich that of V o r

Frue kirke (the Church o f O u r Lady) - completed D ecem

ber 1744 - is an example o f tempus post quern. Besides,

the chancel gable is left out.

41 COPENHAGEN FROM THE SO U THW E ST c. 174 5

This sheet is p u zzlin g because Christian sborg Palace has

been marked w ith a differen t colour o f in k than the rest

of the drawing so that it seems as if the Palace w as added

later. This leads to the th ou gh t that the v iew w as actu ally

older and then brou gh t up to date b y inserting the new

Palace. This conclusion is too easily reached, how ever,

since the spire o f V o r Frue kirke (the Church of O u r Lady)

has the shape in w h ich it w as bu ilt 17 4 4 -4 5 , after a p lan

from 1739, altered in 174 2. Furthermore, Christiansborg is

in accordance w ith a plan from 173 2 w h ich in m an y w ays

differs from the approved and completed draw ing. These

internal contradictions are n ot lig h tly dism issed; it must

be added, however, that the v iew comes from the library of

Christian V i's cousin, C ou n t C. E. Stolberg-W ernigerode.

The two cousins exchanged architectural draw ings, and it

is a well-known fact that there w ere draw ings for C hri

stiansborg in W ernigerode. T his v iew is m ost lik e ly done

by J- J- Bruun (see cat. no. 60).

THE T OW N H A L L 174 5

After the city fire in 1728 o n ly the w alls o f Christian IV 's

town hall remained. The reconstruction w as imm ediately

begun under the supervision o f J. C. Ernst, and in 1733 the

building was finished w ith, it must be admitted, several

alterations made by J. C. Krieger. But the part facing N y-

torv is entirely the w ork of Ernst; he kept four out of

seven arcades and above the ressauts he had gables put up

— the one in the middle carries the K ing's coat of arms,

the sides the city arms. The heavy mansard roof and the

ridge turret are the works of Krieger. In the square the

city scaffold w ith the cake to w hich the crim inals were

tied. The houses bordering on the square are typical of the

reconstruction period after the fire.

ROSENBORG CASTLE A N D GARDEN S c. 1746

The view is from Gothersgade over the garden w all and in

the direction of the southwestern facade o f the castle, w ith

the large tower built in 16 17. The garden itself has the

same appearance as when its gardener, J. C. Krieger, laid

it out in the 1730s. O n the left we see more than h alf of

the long laurel greenhouse - which actually consisted of a

piecing together from 170 7 of two old greenhouses and

the "summ erhouse w ith the fdur buttons". From 17 2 1 it

served as a laurel greenhouse, and 1743 it was rebuilt

once more by Krieger. A particular roof construction per

m itted a partial or whole opening of the roof during pe

riods of hot weather. 1785 the house was replaced b y the

present barracks of the guards.

44 THE D O C K c. 1746

Bruun's w ater colour shows the new dock a couple of

years after the opening. Like Roque's (cat. no. 32) this

view is taken from Gammelholm ; but Bruun's rendering

o f the scenery is more careful and discreet. A few new

buildings have been added, for example a big brickbuilt

warehouse, on the far left. The Royal pavilion has had its

roof construction changed so that it is n ow crowned by

a belvedere. One m ight be tempted to believe that Roque's

domed roof was on ly a provisional device. The Dock was

used in this place until 1918.
