The Book Kitchen
255 Devonshire St
Still the best place in Surry Hills for
a bacon and egg roll, and thus a
breakfast meeting. Great people-
watching on the street, but browsing
the new and pre-loved cookbooks
inside is also a treat.

Bourke Street Bakery
633 Bourke St
The all-day queues and rapid-fire
delivery of coffees, breads and
pastries at this original BSB are the
stuff of legend. Come armed with
patience, and leave indecision and
claustrophobia at home.

The Standard Store
503 Crown St
Pricey but desirable European indie
clothing and accessory brands
for customers who still prefer old-
fashioned touch-and-feel shopping
to either Mr or Mrs Porter. The British
Trickers shoes are my favourite.

Title
499–501 Crown St
Incredible selection of hard-to-find
books, DVDs, CDs and even some
original vinyl. The fact that Title has
expanded to a double shopfront is
a source of joy. It’s reassuring that
people still love these things.

My perfect Surry Hills day might
include a visit to all of these…
