Gnome Espresso &

Winebar

536 Crown St

The opposite side of the street gets

all the action and accolades, but

discerning types (ie. me) opt for this

shady, quiet achiever which is now

open for alfresco dinner too.

Twig Cafe at Garden Life

357 Cleveland St

Service can be erratic but it’s friendly

and charming. My dogs love to sit in

the courtyard amidst the pots, plants

and water features. It’s also licensed.

Chee Soon & Fitzgerald

387 Crown St

Can’t imagine Crown St without this

founding father. CSF was selling its

eccentric, creative and well-edited

homewares long before we thought

of using the word ‘curated’. Plus they

have the best windows on the strip.

Mrs Red and Sons

427 Crown St

Can’t imagine Crown St without this

beautiful red door either. I just hope

people want to keep buying the little

treats and tchotchkes behind it.

Gelato Messina

389 Crown St

I’m not a big gelato man, but I know

that everyone else in the world adores

Messina. I love the kooky mural and

my partner David is drawn to this

place like a magnet. A fridge magnet.
