than shabby, or the south end
of Crown St anything more
than scruffy. But what Surry
Hills lacks in beauty, she
makes up for with spirit, quirk
and simple cool. And not an
arrogant, posturing cool, either.
More like an easy, comfortable-
in-its-skin kind of attitude.
For me, Surry Hills really
is one of the world’s great
urban villages, like Portobello
or St Germain. When Dasher,
the famous ‘Crown Street
dog’ passed away recently,
I felt overwhelmingly sad.
And obviously so did the
many other locals who turned
his beloved little square of
pavement into a shrine for
several weeks. That’s what
Surry Hills does to you. Yes
the coffee’s great, the bars are
glam and the food’s the best in
town. If you want to be really
superficial you could add that
the heels are higher and the
haircuts slicker. We locals know
all that, but what we love best
is our suburb’s heart. Because
quite frankly, it has room in
it for everyone.
