Entrance Examination - 26 July, 1996

However, regulations would be required
to give effect to the new provisions and
there was a saving prov ision under the
new legislation to lake account of legal
professional privilege. Obviously, the
matter was of grave concern to the
Society and to the profession and,
accordingly, a sub-committee was
established to assess the implications of
the legislation and to deal with the
Department. The sub-committee would
be chaired by John Fish and would
comprise, John Costello. Gerard Griffin.
James MacGuill and the Director
General.
7. Liaison with IMO and IHCA
The Chairman of the Litigation
Committee reported that a liaison
group had been established with the
Irish Medical Organisation and Irish
Hospital Consultants Association.
The Group would meet quarterly with
the purpose of resolving inter-
professional policy matters, as well as
individual problems.

McCracken of 15 July. 1996. in
Ahrahanison
& Others -v- The Law-
Society and the Attorney
General.
including his finding of exceptional
circumstances, following upon the
Bloomer
High Court decision in
September 1995. decided that holders of
law degrees who would previously have
been exempted from silting and passing
the Society's standard entrance
examination - known as the FE-1-
wouId not be required to sit and pass
that examination in order to be admitted
to the Society's Law School and to
become apprenticed.
The law degrees in question are:
BCL Degree from University College
Cork:
BCL Degree from University College
Dublin:
BA (Legal Science Degree) and the
LL.B and the B.Comm coupled
with the LL.B from University
College Galway:
BA (Law & Accounting) Degree and
the BA (Law & European Studies)
Degree from University of Limerick
LL.B Degree from University of
Dublin
The Education Committee's decision to
modify the Society's regulations will
benefit persons who obtained or w ill
obtain such a degree in 1996, together
with undergraduates who are currently
studying for such degrees and who
commenced their undergraduate law
degree course in the academic year
1995/1996 or earlier, subject to
obtaining their degree within a period of
not greater than one year longer than the
minimum period of the academic years'
study prescribed for such degree by the
university concerned.
The High Court proceedings
in the
Ahrahanison
ease were
subsequently
adjourned
by consent to 13 September
1996 for mention.
