• Afforestation is present through the nurseries and forest

plantations.

• As a result of the incorporation of forestry activities as a

productive line, there have been some changes at a social

and economic level: this is seen through an increase in the

sources of employment and their revenue, with a notable

increase in rural workers; the birth of a new rural population

trained in new and specific tasks, an improvement in working

conditions and, in general, in the daily life of the communities

UPM Forestal Oriental directly carries out its activities in 5 regions

spread across the departments of Río Negro, Paysandú, Soriano

(Coast), Tacuarembó (North Zone) and Durazno, Rocha and Cerro

Largo (Central-South Zone).

• Very strong presence of afforestation

in the different stages of the

production cycle.

• Presence of large companies

that invigorate and determine the

pace of the area, promoting the

development of various locations

in the area where afforestation is a

very important source of employment

and requires a significant amount of

services.

• Development of many locations

under the “umbrella of forest

development,” using labour, training

the workforce and developing the

most varied services aimed at the

planting, harvesting and relocation

of timber.

• Development of afforestation is

usually identified as the main cause

of the decline in migration in some

rural locations.

• Marked differentiation in local development, opportunities for

social inclusion, public services and prospects for the future

between towns close to national routes and with easy access

and communication with the major urban centres and those

located in rural areas. Rural areas have limited opportunities

for local development, very limited basic infrastructures (energy,

drinking water, transport, roads) and a lack of targeted policies

for these areas, with problems of local emigration and an

ageing population.

• Forestry activity is positively assessed as a generator of

improvements in access to cities within the department, a

promoter of a well-paid jobs and a creator of local forestry

service company (which leads to improvements in local

economies).
