ustainability creates and maintains
the conditions under which human
beings and nature can exist in pro-
ductive harmony to ensure that the social
and economic requirements of present and
future generations are preserved. Anthony
King, Key Account Manager; Alternative Fu-
els for Scania South Africa, spoke to Capital
Equipment News about Scania’s approach
to achieving sustainable transport.
Increased demand for transport, combined
with essential requirements for growth and
development, create a significant challenge
to the current worldwide focus on sustain-
ability in its various forms. Reducing car-
bon footprint is a major force behind en-
vironmental change and many companies
have built sustainability into their business
strategies so that competitiveness, once
restricted to product development, now in-
cludes achieving sustainability levels that
are in line with the ethical, social and en-
vironmental standards in whichever coun-
tries they operate.
Scania, a leading a manufacturer of heavy
duty vehicles, has been active in the field
of sustainable energy since 1916 when it
developed the ethanol engine. Thereafter, in
1929, the company developed its first gas
engine. In line with this tradition of consider-
ation for the environment, Scania has intro-
duced various product innovations that have
helped customers dramatically reduce costs
and carbon emissions while continuously
improving road safety. It goes further though
and to ensure that its vehicles can operate
across the world, Scania has extended its
approach and works with partners to reduce
dependency on fossil fuels by involving itself
in the creation of fuel for local transport that
is sustainable.
