varnishes,

and,

in

oil-

pamting,

not

unfrequently

employed

as

a

var-

nish,

either

alone

or

diluted

with

a

little

oil

of

tur-

pentine.

gallons

green

linseed-oil,

litharge,

and

amber.

Put

all

together

into

a

proper

vessel,

and

let

it

boil

then

it

will

be

ready

for

use

when

cold.

must

also

strain

it.

oil

quick,

the

quantity of

litharge

The

foundation

of

all

varnishes

are

gummy

and

resinous

substances,

and

the

only

liquids

that

can

be

combined

with

them,

so

as

to

form

varnishes,

are

oils,

spirits

of

turpentine,

and

spirits

of

wine.

To

make

copal

varnish:

Take

22

ounces

gum

copal,

(good

and

clear,)

and

dissolve

it

in

a

proper
