Varnish.

Take
1
ounce
copal,
and
J
ounce
shellac;
powder
them
well,
and
put
them
into
a
bottle
or
jar
contain-
ing
a
quart
of
spirits
of
wine.
Place
the
mixture
in
a
warm
place,
and
shake
it
occasionally,
till
you
perceive
that
the
gums
are
completely
dissolved;
and
when
strained
the
varnish
will
be
fit
for use.

Gold-
Coloured
Copal
Varnish.
Take
1
ounce
powdered
copal,
2
ounces
essential
oil
of
lavender,
and
6
ounces
essence
of
turpentine.
Put
the
oil
of
lavender
into
a
matrass
of a
proper
size,
placed
on
a
sand-bath
subject
to
a
moderate
heat.
When
the
oil
is
very
warm,
add
the
copal
from
time
to
time,
in
very
small
quantities,
and
stir
the
mixture
with
a
stick
of
white
wood
rounded
at
the
end.
When
the
copal
has
entirely
disappeared,
put
in
the
turpentine
in
almost
a
boiling
state,
at
three
different
times,
and
keep
continually
stirring
the
mixture
till
the
solution
is
quite
complete.
