“Well then lay them out. Who are you going to lay them
out for?” Rita’s mama asks.
“For Manya.”
Laura will lay out the cards just so, lay them out just so!
“Better lay them out for me,” Rita’s mama throws the cards
on the table.
Laura shuffles the cards, they’re sticky and not so easy to
separate and shuffle. Laura also needs time to push back
the black turmoil.
“Well,
davai, davai,
don’t drag it out!” Rita’s mama won’t
spend the whole day fooling around with strange children.
“Everyone has to be serious and quiet. You’re not allowed to
laugh. Cards can’t be laughed at and made fun of. Else the
cards won’t tell the truth. The cards can get angry and then
during the night …” Laura darkens her voice.
