Socotherm SpA has been awarded a
contract in the Ormen Lange Southern
Field Development Project – Phase II.
The contract, awarded by Statoil, relates
to the application of external 3-layer
polyethylene anticorrosion coating
(Plastykote
®
), internal blasting SA2, and
anodes application on about 36km of
16" pipes and 14km of 6" pipes to be
laid offshore. Coating works, for a total
value of €2.5m, will be performed at the
Socotherm Marine Base, Pozzallo, Italy,
in the 4
th
quarter of 2008.
Zeno Soave, chairman and CEO of
the group, considers Ormen Lange a
strategic contract, as part of the Frame
Agreement signed with Staoil last year.
Under this agreement, which had an
initial term of five years, Socotherm
and Statoil work closely in an extensive
partnership aimed to guarantee Statoil’s
coating needs for its projects either in
North Sea or abroad.
The Ormen Lange field, discovered in
1997 in the deep-water of Norway, is one
of the world’s largest gas reservoirs. The
gas is processed onshore at Nyhamna,
in Aukra municipality, and exported
1,200km to Easington, UK, through the
world’s longest offshore gas pipeline.
At peak production, Ormen Lange will
produce close to 20% of the UK’s gas
requirements, and establish Norway as
the world’s second-largest exporter of
natural gas after Russia.
