New digital

x-ray imaging

capabilities

GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies

has launched the new DXR 250RT

detector, which combines with the

proven Vistaplus V imaging software

to allow on-line, enhanceable, x-ray

imaging of spiral and longitudinal SAW

welds.

The DXR 250RT, which was originally

developed by GE for the highly

demanding medical sector, offers

contrast resolution of less than 1%, and

a spatial resolution of 200 micron.

As a result, it is suitable for resolving

very small indications in high wall

thicknesses. It has a total active area

of 205x205mm, and is suitable for

operation in temperatures ranging from

10 to 35°C.

Image processing and enhancement

of detected images is provided by

the Vistaplus system, a PC-based,

Windows XP Pro-driven system, which

is ideally suited for rapid evaluation

and assessment of x-ray images. It is

of modular design, so that it can be

adapted to suit most user requirements,

and its user interface is optimised for

fast macro development to suit specific

automation needs.

In operation, a real-time image of the

pipe weld being inspected is displayed

on the control desk monitor, while

simultaneously an image that can be

enhanced is also shown. Enhancement

can be carried out using functions

such as contrast adjustment, zoom

and digital filter to allow calculation of

defect area and reference comparison

to facilitate sentencing. Digital images

can be stored in various conventional

formats and, in cases where extensive

archiving is required, GE’s Rhythm

archiving solution can be applied.

GE Sensing & Inspection’s products

are used in a wide range of industries,

including oil and gas, power gener-

ation, aerospace, transportation and

healthcare.
