Automatic high-speed pipe pack palletising

Sica, Italy, has developed a new system in response to the need to extend automation to the cumulative palletising of pipe

packs arriving in-line from multipack palletising units that package pallets separated by plastic saddles.

The Multipallet 3000 consists of one or two conveyors for positioning

pipe packs at the picking station; double storage for separator boards;

a load bearing frame for floor mounting, providing a single portal for

the pack picking and handling device; a pack and separator board

picking and handling device; and one or more pallet accumulator

trolleys.

The Cartesian picking and handling manipulator performs two functions:

it picks incoming packs from the positioning conveyors from the Sica

Multipack packing machines, rotates them if necessary, and places

them on trolleys in predetermined layouts; and it picks separator boards

from dedicated magazines and places them between layers to increase

the stack’s stability.

Multipallet handles and palletises the packs produced by the Multipack,

gradually forming standard dimension pallet loads of maximum length

3,280mm, on trolleys that are specially designed by Sica.

The system has been developed for installation in lines producing

pipes between 32 and 160mm in diameter and from 500 to 3,000mm in

length. The system is able to process packs varying in width between a

minimum of 290mm and a maximum of 620mm, with a maximum height

of 430mm.
