ony also opted for a streamlined media
briefing this year, returning to the
Shrine Auditorium once more. Leaving
commentary to a minimum, the games did the
talking, led by an incredible musical introduction
to herald in Uncharted, onstage pyrotechnics
accompanying
Call of Duty: World War II,
and
dangling zombies for
Days Gone.
There was speculation within our travelling
party that PlayStation would try to derail
Microsoft’s Xbox One X announcement with a
hardware reveal of its own. But alas, the format
holder went solely with software, although it
kept a few notable titles (
Dreams, WiLD, Death
Stranding
) out of the mix with an eye potentially
on its own showcase later in the year.
The boozy Sony room – usually housed in
the upstairs meeting rooms at the LACC – was
replaced this year with a more sober media area
on the show floor, attached to the main booth
area. Here there were a handful of VR stations,
and a row of booths presenting hands-off demos
with some of the bigger upcoming titles on
Sony’s slate.
A big fan of Uncharted, I had to make do with
watching a demo for
The Lost Legacy
. Resisting
the urge to tear the controller from his hands,
our guide played through an action-packed
level replete with a blazing firefight sequence
synonymous with the franchise. New protagonist
Chloe Frazer, assisted by Nadine Ross, will lead
the chase here for an ancient Indian artifact.
“What started off as being story DLC ended
up becoming a full blown game. It’s a sizable
game that fans of Uncharted are going to love”,
said co-writer Josh Scheer.
Fortunately, I won’t have to wait too long to
play
The Lost Legacy
