the neediness of these
people. It was all so vile
and puke making. And
then along came Steven.
Steven was an old friend
of Aggie’s. They’d spent
two years in the same
rowing team when they
were teens and that kind
of experience can draw
people together and keep
them together. I know
it can also drive people
apart because when a kid
moves on from kid things
they want to forget the
entire package, but it can
go either way. And in the
case of Aggie and Steven
it bound them. Aggie
thought of Steven as her
best friend. They could
be in fits of laughter
together over very little,
or even over nothing
at all, at least as far as
I could see. Well, along
with the arrival of Steven,
came the first dissent.
Because Steven actually
seemed to like me which
was disconcerting to
everyone¸ me included.
And Aggie being Aggie
fell in with this as Steven
was her mate. This de-
stabilised Glea and Flake
and they started having
an affair which kind of
left Noisy out in the cold
as far as the couples-
thing went so he started
siding with me over every
little thing that cropped
up. This shift in human
relations nearly knocked
me off my feet as you
might imagine, my legs
always being a little on
the unreliable side for
obvious reasons. I was
left feeling disoriented
and not a little pissed
off. I mean, if I was no
longer in any danger was
there any point in leaving
the house after all? The
