ASTERIUS, COMMENTARII IN PSALMOS (HOMILIAE 31) Homili 14.7-8
JUST AS THE CICADA IS A SEEDLESS SON AND KNOWS THE EARTH AS A MOTHER BUT KNOWS NO
FATHER, THUS CHRIST KNOWS THE VIRGIN MOTHER, BUT HIS FATHER THE SEWER HE KNOWS NOT.
AND JUST AS THE CICADA, BORN OF THE EARTH, STEALS AWAY FROM THE MANY AND LIES ON THE
GROUND AS IF LOWLY AND INSIGNIFICANT, THOUGH ONCE HE HAS A DRINK OF DEW AND CLIMBS
UP A TREE, HIS SINGING IS RENOWN OVER THE LAND, THUS CHRIST WAS BORN LIKE THE CICADA,
LOWLY.
Let us wait
let us not start
the days
let them stay behind
always forward
let us never spit out
the cool pip
SOUDA-ARCHILOCHOS (i. 376.11.Adlez) = AELIAN. fr.80 Herchez
The gods do not forget the great ones even after they are dead.
Thus, Pythios Apollo blessed Archilochas, a poet of noble bearing
(provided one removes the foul language and the aspersions, as if
cleansing him from a stain) when he died on the battlefield, where
everyone’s fortune is equal to everyone else’s. And when his killer,
a man called Kalondas with the nickname Korakas (Crow), went
to the god with a petition, Pythia forbade him to enter consid-
ering him unclean, with the famous pronouncement “You have
killed the servant of the Muses: exit the temple”. To defend him-
self, Kalondas invoked the circumstances saying he was obliged
to either kill or be killed and asked the god not to despise him be-
cause it was his fate to survive and he cursed his choice of killing
the opponent rather than being killed. And the god took pity on
him and orders him to go to Tainaron where Tettix was buried and
to assuage the soul of the son of Telesikles (the father of Archilo-
chus) and mollify it with libations. He obeyed and was spared the
wrath of the god.
TO GO TO TAINARON WHERE TETTIX HAS BEEN BURIED AND AP-
PEASE THE SOUL OF THE SON OF TELESICLES:
