BREATH II

summertime noons

the smoke of the soul

rises

it dissolves in the previous

years the ones gone by

remembrance upright

awaits to be burned

the next day

the same one this year – August 20

as that of another

the heat and sweat of that other time

the cool water-dipped relief

that they would touch on now

in eternal repetition

to be reborn

plane trees lean in the water

the crickets large grasshoppers

instruments of fulfillment

in the night

the stars

wandering across the sky

watch us

vainly long after homecoming

BREATH III VARIATIONS

with the souls embraced by the waves

with the waves’ souls in their embrace

leaving their soul in the embrace of the

waves

with their souls in the waves’ embrace

having embraced the waves’ breath

embracing the souls of the waves

with the waves in their embrace

while the waves in their embrace

hold their souls

while the waves are holding the souls

in their embrace

while embracing the souls of the waves

leaving their soul on the waves

FREUD: “DAS ICH UND DAS ES” THE EGO AND THE ID. [CH.2, p.6ff.]

CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE SURFACE OF THE PHYSICAL APPARATUS... IN THE PRECONSCIOUS REP-

RESENTATION A CONNECTION OCCURS WITH VERBAL PRESENTATIONS. THESE VERBAL PRESEN-

TATIONS ARE RESIDUES OF MEMORIES... WHATEVER WISHES TO BECOME CONSCIOUS FROM THE

INTERIOR, MUST TRY TO TRANSFORM ITSELF INTO AN EXTERNAL PERCEPTION. THIS BECOMES POS-

SIBLE BT MEANS OF MEMORY TRACES... VERBAL RESIDUES ARE DERIVED PRIMARILY FROM AUDITO-

RY PERCEPTIONS SO THAT THE SYSTEM OF THE PRECONSCIOUS HAS, AS IT WERE, A SPECIAL SEN-

SORY SOURCE... IN ESSENCE A WORD IS THE MNEMIC RESIDUE OF A WORD THAT HAS BEEN HEARD.

It is then that seated on the verdant branch the loud

blue-winged Cicada starts to sing in the summer

for people, eating and drinking dew

and from dawn onward all day in the appalling heat

he pours his voice to the ground

ODYSSEAS ELYTIS THE CICADAS:

Among the sea urchins

in the recesses with the tamarisks

Like the seamen of old

I would question the cicadas:

Hello, my winged beauties

hello and long live

Will the Sun King still keep?

And they would all together answer me

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep He ‘ll Keep and Keep and Keep

LOGGOS: DAPHNIS AND CHLOE: 1.23.1-2

“The time of year was inflaming them as well. Spring was already

drawing to an end and summer was starting and everything was

flourishing, the trees ripe with fruit, the fields full of crops. The

cicada song was delectable, the smell of the fruit was sweet, the

bleating of the flocks was pleasant... And the winds whistled as

they came breezing through the trees and the apples were falling

to the ground out of love and the sun was disrobing all things out

of a love for beauty.
