for which it was entered. However,
the success was short lived and
subsequent seasons were turbulent
due to changes in rules for 2.5L
engines and disputes among
team members.
In 1961 they won the first
of their 16 Constructors’
Championship titles, with Phil
Hill leading the team, and followed
this with the 1964 Championship,
however, they would have to
wait until 1975 to win the title
again. Scuderia Ferrari’s departure
from world sports car racing two
years previous enabled them to
focus their efforts on Formula 1
and the sacrifice paid off: for the
next two years they retained the
Constructors’ Championship. In
fact, between 1975 and 1983 Ferrari
secured six Constructors’ crowns
before a barren spell was ended with
the arrival of Michael Schumacher
in 1999. The 1976 season has been
immortalized on the silver screen
as the rivalry between Ferrari’s Niki
Lauda and McLaren’s James Hunt
erupted both on and off the track in
Ron Howard’s 2013 movie,
Rush
.
As well as running their own team,
Ferrari have regularly supplied
59
