MB. WILLIAM J. SKINNEH, Solicitor, died on 22nd

December, 1943, at his

residence, Mountain

Villas, Clonmel.

Mr. Skinner served his apprenticeship to the

late Mr. James G. Skinner, Mitchelstown was

admitted

in Michaelmas Sittings, 1907, and

practised at Clonmel up to the year 1926, when

he was appointed County Registrar for County

Tipperary.

THE REVEREND SIR JOHN O'CONNELL, LL.D., died

at Brockenhurst, England, 011 28th December,

1943. He served his apprenticeship to his father.

Thomas F. O'Connell,

28 Bachelor's Walk,

Dublin, and was admitted in Trinity Term, 1889.

He became senior partner in the firm of Thomas

F. O'Connell, Rooney and Co. He was, at various

times, a director of the National Bank, a member

of the Senate of Dublin University, and a Governor

of University College, Cork, and was associated

with a number of charities and scientific societies.

He was knighted in 1914. He was a member of

the Council from 1919 to 1925 and served as

Vice-President of the Society in 1923-24. He

retired from practice in 1925 to enter the Benedic*

-tine Order. He subsequently left the monastery

and, in 1929, was ordained as a secular priest,

becoming curate of the Church of St. Patrick,

Soho.

In 1926 the distinction of the Order of the

Holy Sepulchre was conferred on him by His Holi

ness Pius XI for services in connection with the

Latin Patriarchate

in

the Holy Land.

The

President's Chair now in the Council Chamber

was presented

by

Sir John to the Society in

1928. The chair is a fine example of the work

of the late Mr. Hicks, carved in relief with the

arms of the Society, and was presented to the

Society in grateful remembrance of the many

kindnesses received from the Council by both

the donor and his father, the late Thomas Francis

O'Connell, who was, Vice-President of the Society

in 1895-96.

The late Sir John O'Connell was a

life member and at one time a Director of the'

Solicitors' Benevolent Association in whose affairs

he took a very active interest. He was a generous

contributor to the funds of the Association.
