Historic Earle Theatre and Old-Time Music
Heritage Hall
The Historic Earle Theatre in Downtown Mount Airy,
built in 1938, is reminiscent of classic movie houses
with an Art Deco-style design. It was built in 1938 and
was chosen as a site for the premiere of “Gone with
theWind” simultaneously with the grand opening of the
film in Atlanta, Georgia. Inside is the Old-Time Music
Heritage Hall, with exhibits on Surry County old-time
and bluegrass musicians. The theatre also shows feature
films and classic movies throughout the year, as well
as Thursday-night and Saturday afternoon bluegrass
and old-time music jam sessions,TAPS music lessons,
old-time dances,Voice of the Blue Ridge and Blue Ridge
and Beyond concert series.The Earle is home to the
second-longest-running live radio broadcast,WPAQ’s
Merry-go-Round, every Saturday at 11 a.m.

This Living Historical Farm, located in the Shoals com-
munity, is open to the public to experience everyday
farm life in North Carolina’s northwestern Piedmont ca.
1900.Visitors can take part in daily activities and special
events of bygone farm life, as well as see, smell, touch
and hear things once common in rural NC.Annual
events include the Cornshucking Frolic in October and
Christmas by Lamplight in December. Other annual
events focus on the lifestyles of folks who lived on rural
farms, century including sheep shearing, baking, and
plowing with animals. Ice cream socials, music, and
children's games are also enjoyed.Visitors may encoun-
ter antique farm equipment, farm animals, and savor
old-fashioned apple varieties grown in the one-of-a-kind
heritage apple orchard.

Laurel Hill is the birthplace of the Confederate General
J.E.B Stuart. It is located in Ararat,Virginia, just 7 miles
north of Mount Airy. It features self-guided trails
through the property that once included part of the old
Mount Airy & Eastern Railroad. Plaques on site identify
where the birthplace was located, as well as the loca-
tion of a Native American site.A CivilWar Encampment
and Living HistoryWeekend is held each year, as well as
other special events. Group tours should call ahead.The
visitor center/office is open by appointment.
