The CivilWar Trails are old roads soldiers used, featuring
numerous sites that tell the story of the CivilWar.The
trails run from Forts Fisher and Macon at the Atlantic
coast to the western mountains of North Carolina.Within
Surry, there are three designated civil war sites, one at the
York Tavern in Rockford, one in Downtown Elkin, and one
located at the Battle of Siloam site, along theYadkin River.

Visitors will want to visit the observation deck where you
can see nearly all of the activities and are close enough to
be plenty startled when an explosion occurs, which hap-
pens several times each day.The observation deck can be
reached by car, and access is open without restriction each
day that the quarry is in operation, including weekends,
during the daylight hours.Astronauts circling the world can
see it from outer space, it is so big.

known as the Overmountain Men.This route led to the

Surry County Register of Deeds Office
The mission of the Surry County Register of Deeds
is to preserve the integrity of important records and
make them accessible to citizens, while protecting
their interests.The Register of Deeds office’s records
are recorded and maintained in accordance with the
North Carolina General Statutes and open for public
inspection. Some of the documents recorded in this
office include deeds of trust and other land-related
records; birth, death, and marriage records for Surry
County dating back to 1913; marriage bonds dating
back to the 1700s; plats & unit ownership plans; uniform
commercial code (fixture fillings); notary oaths; military
discharges; corporation and assumed names; satisfac-
tions of deeds of trust; and more. Office hours are 8:15
a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

TheVillage (ca. 1797-1900) was once the seat of gov-
ernment for Surry County, when the county encom-
passed modern-day Forsyth, Stokes, andYadkin Coun-
ties. Rockford features historical buildings and a quaint
village atmosphere. Many of the historical buildings
allow visitors, such as the The village features the work-
ing Rockford General Store, a canoe and kayak outfitter,
a North Carolina CivilWar Trail site, the Rockford Inn,
Rockford Park, and the old Rockford Methodist Church.

Located on Moore Street in Mount Airy, this historicVicto-
rian/Italianate house was constructed in 1860 and is the
earliest known structure remaining in town. One of the
main features includes a historic summer house (gazebo)
constructed of wood poles and intervening root walls
