Mechanistic modelling

Empirical

models are statistical tools enabling the

treatment planner to use clinical experience efficiently.

Assume a black box between input (dose distribution) and

output (outcome)

Based on DVHs; ignore internal organ substructures and

variation in response across the organ.

Attempts have been made to develop more

mechanistic

models of normal tissue response.

The outcome is modelled as a consequence of

mechanisms in the normal tissue triggered by radiation.
