Single Lab Validation of a Method for the

Determination of β-Galactooligosaccharides in

Infant Formula & Adult Nutritionals

Objective

Question

Determine if the performance of a method to determine β‐

galactooligosaccharides (GOS) in infant formula and adult

nutritionals meets the requirements set by the AOAC‐SPIFAN

working group

Authors

People to ask

Sean Austin (NRC, Lausanne), Denis Cuany (NRC, Lausanne),

Catherine Murset‐Mounoud (NRC, Lausanne)

Summary

Answer

The method developed meets most of the standard method

performance requirements that can be tested in a single lab.

Unfortunately the trueness of the method is, in general, slightly

below the target of 90‐110%, but the method is currently the best

solution available for the determination of GOS in lactose‐

containing matrices.
