ELECTIONS FOR
BOARD MEMBERS
By a three-fifths majority, a board of education may elect to hold a non-
partisan primary election. Such election shall be held only if the number
of candidates is at least one more than two times the number of
available positions on the board of education at the general election.
Such provision may be revoked by a three-fifths majority of the board of
education five years or more after the adoption of the original resolution
of the board.

In the course of administering the elementary and secondary
achievement assessments, the following information of a student or the
student’s family may not be “collected, tracked, housed with, reported to,
or shared with any entity, including the federal or state government”:

Each board of education shall use state board-approved standards for
professional development to guide the development of the local
professional program.

PROGRAM
A board of education may by resolution establish a professional
development program for teachers employed by the district. The
resolution may specify reimbursement for all or any of the part of the cost
of the training, and this reimbursement does not require a supplemental
contract.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Together with the board, a Superintendent may approve a leave of
absence of one or two semesters for professional improvement for a
teacher who has completed five years of service. The teacher may be
required to return to the district for one year following the leave (unless
the teacher has 25 years of service in Ohio). Granting the leave is
subject to the availability of a satisfactory substitute teacher and a cap of
not more than 5% of the professional staff.
The teacher on leave may be compensated a partial salary, which
cannot exceed the difference between the teacher’s expected salary and
the substitute’s pay.

PROFICIENCY
LEVELS
Effective the 2013-2014 school year, a school district or school will be
considered to have met the performance indicator on state required
assessments if at least 80% of the tested students attain a score of
proficient or higher. That percentage increases to 85% of the tested
eleventh grade students for the Ohio Graduation Test.

EDUCATIONAL
Any district that is a party to the establishment or operation of a joint or
cooperative educational program may charge tuition or fees to
participating students. However, if the joint or cooperative educational
program involves a community school, the community school is not
permitted to charge a fee.

No board member shall have any pecuniary interest, direct or indirect, in
any contract of the board or be employed in any manner for
compensation by the board, except under very limited circumstances.
