integrated payment systems in which the same card is used for public transport and

other purposes, e.g. car parking, telephones, etc.

Public transport priority systems: Priority for public transport vehicles in urban

areas is becoming increasingly important. Options include public transport priority

lanes, gating systems and priority treatment for buses and trams at traffic signals.

However, the development of integrated urban traffic control systems which attempt

to optimise traffic flows has caused difficulties for public transport priority. Currently,

developments are made with the integration of public transport priority measures with

urban traffic control techniques.

7.6 The use of telematics solutions in the example of the City

of Wroclaw road infrastructure

IntelligentTransportation System inWroclaw is primarily a broad set of technologies

(telecommunications, information technology, measurement and automation) as well as

traffic management techniques used in transport to increase the efficiency of transport

system, protect the lives of road users and natural resources. Wroclaw, as one of the

pioneering cities, decided to tackle a huge challenge of ITS project inWroclaw, which was

to be implemented in a vast, multidisciplinary scope. At that time, it was the biggest

implementation project in the area of traffic management systems for the whole country

(see Figure 7.4). To this day no other solution has been made to compare with Wroclaw

system in terms of size and degree of integration, which was implemented at the same

time, in full systemic, equipment and functional scope on so many levels of supporting

the traffic users, linking 155 intersections with the traffic control system.
