Tfhe H. C. Oersted Institute.

The new H. G. Oersted Institute, situated in new grounds belonging

to the University, is described in pictures and in the text, also on

the back of the book. A list of people employed in the spring of

1965 is added.

These were glimpses from the development - throughout 150

years - from Skidenstræde to the H. C. Oersted Institute in the

new University Grounds.

When H. C. Oersted, at the age of forty-three, made his world-

famous discovery of electromagnetism, he had been professor of

physics at Copenhagen University for 14 years. When discovering

how to produce free aluminium metal, Oersted had, moreover,

been university professor of chemistry for 18 years. Thus it was

only natural that Copenhagen University wanted to honour the

name o f Oersted by calling its new, large institute for the exact

science after him.

Not until he had been working for 23 years as professor of the

University the fifty-two-year old H. C. Oersted succeeded in

having The technical University founded. (in 1829). His sphere

of action was then increased to the position of principal and pro

fessor of physics at the Technical University, and he also worked

here until his death in 1851.
