voestalpine Austria Draht is set to have
completed an ambitious newmill project
by 2016 – the construction of what could
be Europe’s most modern wire rolling mill
at voestalpine’s Leoben-Donawitz site.
On start-up, the mill will produce around
550,000 tons of wire rods each year for
the automotive and energy sector. The
investment will secure the long-term
future of the Donawitz site, headquarters
of the voestalpine Group’s metal
engineering division.
In recent years, the group has invested
over one billion euros in its eight sites
in Styria. During the last business year,
around 8,000 employees in the metal
engineering and special steel divisions in
Styria generated revenue of €3.3 billion.
800 new jobs were created and 360
apprentices trained in the region.
The contract to build the new rolling mill
was awarded to the Italian constructor
Danieli, and the new walking beam
furnace will be supplied by Styria’s
Andritz AG.
“In future,
voestalpine
will primarily
e x p a n d
in regions
o u t s i d e
Europe, in growing markets such as
Asia or North and South America. At
the same time, however, investments
such as this also secure existing Austrian
sites over the long term,” explained
Franz Kainersdorfer, member of the
management board of voestalpine
AG and head of the metal engineering
division to which voestalpine Austria
Draht belongs.
