Although the treatment of many chronic diseases has been shifting to the less costly and
resource-intensive outpatient setting for some time, the average number of diabetes mellitus
cases is rising in the inpatient and outpatient settings alike—a trend that is expected to continue,
especially if the growing incidence of diabetes continues unabated.

• Between 2010 and 2011, per-hospital outpatient
case counts rose for all 12 disease states listed.
Meanwhile, the per-hospital inpatient case
count fell for seven of these 12 diseases states.
• Between 2010 and 2011, the total number
of outpatient cases per hospital climbed
more than 20% for breast cancer (26.7%) and
osteoarthritis (20.6%).
• The number of inpatient diabetes mellitus
cases per hospital was highest, by state, in
Delaware in 2011, at 3,281.1, more than
double the national benchmark (1,282.8).
• Between 2009 and 2011, the number of inpatient
diabetes cases per Delaware hospital increased
11.0%, reversing the gradual decline in the
number of such cases between 2007 and 2009.
