Key Takeaway
In an effort to streamline care, hospitals are monitoring patients to ensure they are not spending
unneeded time in the hospital. Some facilities offer internal incentives based on measures such as
ALOS.
1
One tool to help accomplish this is electronic tracking systems, which record milestones in
patient care, thus increasing accountability and coordination in reducing ALOS.

• By size, hospitals with 250 or more beds posted
the longest—or equaled the longest—average
length of stay (ALOS) per inpatient case
across all 10 featured disease states in 2011.
• In 2011, MHS-owned facilities recorded longer
ALOS per inpatient case than did their non-MHS
counterparts for six of the 10 diseases profiled
(most notably diabetes mellitus, 4.4 days vs. 4.0).
• Between 2007 and 2011, hospitals shortened
ALOS for by half a day inpatients receiving
treatment for colorectal cancer, head and
neck cancer, and lung cancer.
• Although hospitals did not record similar ALOS
reductions for breast cancer or prostate cancer,
both of these tumor types had notably shorter
ALOS than the other cancers listed.
