HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Key Takeaway
A major contributor to a hospital’s overall operational costs, the mechanics of the pharmacy
are under scrutiny as hospital administrators continue to explore avenues for reducing expenses.
Increasing pharmacy utilization, coupled with a looming demand for care from an aging U.S.
population, require hospitals to seek out other cost control methods—including a greater reliance
on evolving health care technologies—in order to offset Medicare reimbursement cuts.

Rx Costs per Discharge Are Higher at Hospitals With Fewer Surgeries
• Although drug costs per discharge increased
just 2.0% at hospitals performing between one
and 999 surgeries, such facilities maintained the
highest such pharmacy expense ratio in 2011.
• However, hospitals in this same surgical volume
range had relatively low pharmacy costs per
staffed bed—a ratio that was 44.9% lower than
at hospitals performing 10,000 or more surgeries.

• Across Texas, pharmacy costs per staffed bed
at hospitals with 250 or more beds ($58,293)
were almost twice that of hospitals with fewer
than 50 beds ($33,808) in 2011, but were still
lower than the national benchmark ($60,092).
• Pharmacy costs per staffed bed in Houston
were higher than the Texas state average,
regardless of facility size in 2011. The
difference was most apparent at small
hospitals (those with fewer than 50 beds).
