Top 20 MHSs Collectively Add to Number of Hospitals Owned
• Seven of the top 20 MHSs, ranked by number of
staffed beds, increased their number of owned
hospitals between 2010 and 2011, driving up
the collective number of hospitals owned by
these 20 systems, to 897 from 889 the prior year.
• Meanwhile, staffing ratios at 11 of the top 20
MHSs also edged up in 2011. Of these 11,
Catholic Health East recorded the largest rise in
the number of FTEs per occupied bed, to 8.3 in
2011 from 7.5 the year before—a 10.7% increase.

Staffing Levels Rise Faster at Ascension Than at HCA Over a Five-Year Period
• For all five years shown, HCA, the top-ranked
for-profit MHS by number of beds, staffed
fewer FTEs per occupied bed than Ascension
Health, the top-ranked not-for-profit MHS.
• Both systems boosted staffing ratios between
2007 and 2011, though the rate of increase was
moderately higher at Ascension Health (up
4.9% vs. 1.4% at HCA).
