Key Takeaway
With increased focus on hospitals’ quality of care, facilities may face a balancing act in managing
certain utilization measures, like pneumonia patients’ readmission rates and corresponding
average length of stay. Given Medicare’s edict—via the Affordable Care Act—to reduce
readmission rates, hospitals will continue to look for ways to maximize patient care in the inpatient
setting, as well as methods of coordinating care once patients have been discharged.
• Between 2007 and 2011, MHS and non-MHS
hospitals alike pared ALOS for inpatient cases of
sepsis/pneumonia (to 6.0 days from 6.2) at MHS
hospitals and to 4.9 from 5.2 at those not in MHSs.
• For each of the five years shown, ALOS for
inpatient sepsis/pneumonia cases at non-MHS
hospitals was roughly a day shorter than for
such cases at hospitals belonging to an MHS.
• In 2011, facilities not belonging to MHSs
reported shorter average lengths of stay (ALOS)
than their MHS counterparts for six of the 12
common disease states featured.
• The most marked change between 2010 and
2011 among the diseases listed was at non-MHS
hospitals, which reduced ALOS for depression
inpatient cases to 5.8 days from 6.3 (–7.9%).
