Growing Share of Systems Are Regionally Focused
Key Takeaway
As hospitals gravitate to membership in highly integrated systems and away from proprietorship,
it is likely that systems with a regional focus will continue to increase their penetration and reach.
For example, the Carolinas HealthCare System, a regionally focused system headquartered in
Charlotte, NC, has grown to include 27 licensed hospitals in 2011 (see page 39), from 23 in 2009,
3
as it amplifies coverage and adjusts its focus of care toward a more integrated delivery model.

• The clear majority of highly integrated health
systems (67.8%) focused on delivering care at
a regional level, the only delivery category to
show growth—albeit small—from 2011 to 2012.
• After four consecutive years of growth
(to 335 systems in 2010 from 320 in 2006), the
total number of highly integrated systems
slipped to 332 in 2011 and held steady in 2012.
1
Local systems serve a limited number of counties. Statewide systems serve an entire state. Regional systems serve areas of a state or several states.
2
Includes systems initiated by universities, clinics, and local, state and federal governments.

Most Populous Metropolitan Areas Are Home to the Largest Share of Systems
• Systems most often were headquartered in
MSAs with populations of at least 3 million in
2012, perhaps a sign that regional systems were
anchored in major population centers.
• Conversely, fewer than one in 10 (8.1%) of the
nation’s 332 highly integrated health systems
in 2012 were headquartered in areas
categorized as nonmetropolitan.
