• For cases of any of the five cardiovascular
conditions or procedures profiled, care
delivered at an MHS hospital generated higher
charges than care at non-MHS facilities in 2011.
• Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
procedures generated charges of $150,115
per case at MHS hospitals in 2011, 11.2% higher
than the same procedure at non-MHS facilities.
Cardiovascular Conditions Generate Higher Charges at MHS Facilities
• Between 2010 and 2011, charges per case grew
at MHS and non-MHS facilities alike for nine of
12 disease listed. For all but depression and
multiple sclerosis, these charge increases were
higher, by MHS ownership, at MHS hospitals.
• For each of the 12 featured disease states, MHS
hospitals generated higher charges per case
than their non-MHS counterparts in 2011. This
differential was greatest, by disease state, for
inpatient stroke cases ($41,851 vs. $30,658).
Key Takeaway
This differential in charges between MHS and non-MHS facilities may be due to the fact that hospitals
within MHSs tend to be larger and located in urban areas where hospital networks can more easily
thrive. Thus, these facilities attract larger numbers of complex cases that require more resources to
treat. Regardless of case complexity, the cost of inpatient care continues to rise, heightening the
need to better manage these conditions outside this most expensive setting.
