• The average numbers of hospital inpatient
cases at non-MHS facilities declined between
2010 and 2011 for all 12 disease states listed. In
fact, this average dropped at least 20% for 11 of
the 12 diseases shown (osteoarthritis excluded).
• For example, the number of inpatient stroke
cases per non-MHS hospital dropped by more
than a quarter (26.6%) in 2011, to 68.1 cases
from 92.8 in 2010. Inpatient stroke cases at
MHS-owned facilities edged up 0.8% in 2011.

Key Takeaway
Since 2004, the number of hospitals belonging to MHSs has increased each year, whereas the
number of non-MHS facilities has generally decreased (see page 23). Meanwhile, as MHSs continue
to acquire large, independent facilities—especially those with robust outpatient capabilities—
the ongoing shift away from inpatient treatment at non-MHS facilities will likely accelerate.
