• Although annual professional office/clinic
charges rose for atrial fibrillation patients in
three of four regions (West excepted), such
charges fell fractionally across the nation
between 2010 ($2,192) and 2011 ($2,151).
• Of the four regions profiled, professional office/
clinic charges per year were highest in the
Northeast in 2011, at $2,341. Such charges
increased 4.2% from the 2010 mark of $2,247,
the largest percentage growth by region.
Key Takeaway
More than half of atrial fibrillation patients across the U.S. had at least three diagnosed comorbidities
in 2011 (data not shown). Patients with multiple chronic conditions—especially those over the age
of 65—provide significant challenges in terms of both treatment and cost. Complex chronic disease
patients tend to receive care from various physicians and sustain multiple medication regimens,
making it far more difficult to effectively monitor and adjust their treatment.
• In all three years shown, annual professional
office/clinic charges for the treatment of atrial
fibrillation patients rose in accordance with the
number of comorbidities, with a sizeable jump
among those with more than two comorbidities.
• In 2011, for example, atrial fibrillation patients
with more than two diagnosed comorbidities
generated $2,740 in professional office/clinic
charges, more than double such charges for
those who had zero comorbidities ($1,276).
