HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Multihospital systems (MHSs) are chains that
own two or more institutions. An MHS can be
not-for-profit, for-profit (investor-owned) or
government-owned. The number of hospitals
in MHSs has grown annually since 2004 and
climbed a notable 8.5% between 2010 (2,944)
and 2011 (3,195)—the steepest annual rate of the
10 years profiled. System affiliation is attractive
to hospitals for a variety of reasons, but the
emphasis that the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
places on integration among hospitals and
other providers is likely chief among them.
Information technology requirements and
risk-sharing provisions outlined in the ACA will
likely further encourage the centralization of
these providers through system participation.
