Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Michigan Are Readmitted at Relatively High Rates
LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
• Of Type 2 diabetes patients nationally who
were admitted to an inpatient facility between
2009 and 2011, 30-day readmission rates were
at least 19.0%, regardless of type of therapy.
• For all six regions, 30-day readmission rateswere
lower for Type 2 diabetes patients who filled
prescriptions for insulin products than for those
who received three non-insulins.
• Regardless of type of therapy, three- and
30-day readmission rates for Michigan Type 2
diabetes patients were considerably higher
than the corresponding national benchmarks.
• For example, Michigan Type 2 diabetes patients
who filled prescriptions for three non‑insulin drugs
recorded a 30-day readmission rate of 35.1%,
10 percentage points above the national mean.
Key Takeaway
As patient readmission rates increasingly become a key indicator of hospitals’ quality of care—
in some instances linked to incentives and penalties—more hospitals (and systems) likely will
develop proactive programs like medication reconciliation and transitional patient coaching,
with the goal of reducing unplanned readmissions.

Figures reflect the percentage of Type 2 diabetes patients who were readmitted to an inpatient facility in the three-year period between 2009
and 2011. These percentages include patients who filled multiple prescriptions. Readmissions are not necessarily due to Type 2 diabetes.
