HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Hospitals
Backgrounder
Hospital measures tracked in this Digest are
generally for short-term, acute-care, nonfederal
facilities; but long-term care components
are likewise accounted for in the total facility
measures. Following annual declines, from
2003 to 2006, in the total number of acute-care
hospitals, the count expanded moderately
through 2009, to 5,232. Between 2010 (5,181) and
2011 (5,211), the facility count rose fractionally,
in spite of impending regulations and payment
systems mandated by the Affordable Care Act
(ACA), including Medicare requirements for
meeting quality benchmarks. Many facilities
continue to engage in the process of joining with
other providers, institutions and payers to form
accountable care organizations (ACOs). This
impetus toward value and integration in health
care is expected to continue to place pressure
on hospitals across the U.S., especially as they
adapt to meet the challenges of major Medicare,
Medicaid, and exchanges coverage expansions
and the increasing burden of chronic disease.
