Average Admissions Decline for 11 of the Top 20 MHSs
• Of the 20 top MHSs, ranked by number of
staffed beds, 11 recorded fewer admissions
per hospital in 2011 than in 2010. At CHRISTUS
Health, for example, average admissions fell
by 5.1%, to 10,589 in 2011 from 11,162 in 2010.
• However, 12 of these MHSs recorded a rise in
average length of stay (ALOS) between 2010
and 2011. North Shore–Long Island Jewish Health
System experienced a noteworthy increase in
ALOS, to 6.5 days from 5.8 the previous year.

After Years of Decline, North Shore–Long Island Jewish ALOS and Occupancy Rise Sharply
• Between 2007 and 2010, North Shore–Long
Island Jewish Health System trimmed ALOS by
9.4%, to 5.8 days from 6.4, coinciding with a
7.3 percentage point drop in occupancy.
• However, both trends reversed in 2011: ALOS
climbed by 12.1%, to 6.5 days (the largest gain
among the top 20 MHSs for this measure), and
occupancy grew by 2.4 percentage points.
