HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Highly integrated health care systems own or
contract with at least three components of health
care delivery: at least one acute-care hospital,
at least one physician component and at least
one other component of care. Such systems must
also have a systemwide contract with a payer,
such as an HMO, traditional insurer or government
entity. In 2012, the total number of hospitals in
highly integrated systems grew to 2,240, the fifth
consecutive annual increase. With payer/provider
integration as a focus of health care reform, many
of these already existing systems are forming
accountable care organizations (ACOs) to further
refine the coordination of care—all in an attempt
to improve the quality of health care for patients
while controlling costs for the industry as a whole.
