System Facilities Account for Majority of Discharges in Many MSAs
• For 18 of the 20 selected MSAs profiled, the
system percentage of total hospital discharges
exceeded 50%. Indeed, in three of these
markets (Baltimore, Cleveland and San
Francisco), system shares topped 80%.
• Average lengths of stay (ALOS) for system
hospitals were shorter than for nonsystem
facilities in 11 of 20 local markets. For example,
nonsystem ALOS in New York was 7.0 days
compared with 4.7 days at system hospitals.
UPMC Outpatient Surgery Volume Is Nearly Triple the U.S. Average in 2011
• The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
(UPMC), which operated 12 acute-care
facilities in 2011, recorded average
outpatient surgery counts that topped state
and national averages in both profiled years.
• Although the average number of outpatient
surgeries dipped slightly for facilities in the
UPMC system between 2010 (10,867.5) and
2011 (10,302.5), it remained nearly three
times the national average of 3,868.4 in 2011.
