Practices With 20 or More Physicians Boost Total Practice Count
• The total number of medical group practices
grew to 12,937 from 12,838, led by a 3.5%
increase in the number of medical group
practices with 20 or more full-time equivalent
(FTE) physicians between 2011 and 2012.
• Of the 170,717 physicians practicing in groups
in 2012 (up from 168,793 in 2011), nearly half
(49.2%) belonged to groups with 20 or more
FTE physicians. Still, such groups accounted for
a disproportionate 11.9% of all groups in 2012.
Key Takeaway
The PCMH model—in which the primary care physician acts as the patient’s medical coordinator—
shows promise as a means to better manage patient care among multiple settings, specialties
and patient conditions, and to improve outcomes. The results of the FQHC APCP demonstration
should provide additional information on the overall feasibility of this model of care.

• In June 2011, the Department of Health and
Human Services launched the Federally
Qualified Health Center Advanced Primary Care
Practice (FQHC APCP) demonstration project.
• This project gave $42 million to 500 community
health centers that use the patient-centered
medical home (PCMH) model to coordinate
care for 200,000 Medicare beneficiaries.
