HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Of the nearly 13,000 medical group practices with
five or more licensed physicians that are tracked in
this Digest, more than a quarter (27.8%) belonged
to integrated systems in 2012. The number of
system-affiliated medical groups in 2012 (3,594)
recorded a substantial 78.5% rise since 2001
(2,014). Integration is likely spurred, not only by
the extensive resources and stability afforded by
system participation, but also by the incentives to
coordinate care offered through various provisions
of the Affordable Care Act.
One coordinated care model—the
patient-centered medical home—is being tested
by thousands of medical groups through a
number of initiatives from Medicare, Medicaid
and private insurers.

This paradigm attempts to
address the fragmentation and high cost of
health care by designating primary care
providers to oversee the full continuum of
patient care and changing how practices
and providers are paid by emphasizing patient
outcomes rather than volume.

A medical group practice must have five or more licensed physicians whose primary focus of business is seeing regularly scheduled patients
for nonsurgical services other than imaging. The physicians must have a share in the physical setting and office management of the practice,
which must offer outpatient care and be physically separate from a hospital. Data are effective as of midyear 2012.
