Percentages of Practices Offering Mammography Rise Across All Specialties
Key Takeaway
In 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended that regular mammography screening
begin for women at age 50 and recur every two years.
1
This recommendation—though not adopted
by all medical entities—may have had the effect of reducing mammograms among women in their
40s, slowing the proliferation of mammography services among medical group practices between
2010 and 2011
2
. However, the Affordable Care Act includes mammography in its requirement that
plans provide no-cost preventive services, possibly encouraging increased use of this diagnostic tool.
• Between 2010 and 2012, the portions of
practices offering mammography rose for all
eight specialties shown, and remained the
highest, by specialty, for oncology in 2012.
• Growth in this measure was sharpest, by
specialty, for cardiology groups during this time
(up 4.3 percentage points), with most of the
expansion occurring between 2011 and 2012.
Specialty Practices Increase Use of Most Imaging Modalities
• Regardless of specialty, the percentages of
medical group practices that offered four of
the five imaging modalities listed (ultrasound
excepted) expanded between 2011 and 2012.
• For example, the shares of groups offering
mammography services grew between
1.4 (OB/GYN) and 4.0 (cardiology)
percentage points during this period.
